Catherine Orfald
1848 Brooke Valley Rd

I am a painter inspired by what I see around me: people, animals, landscapes, life and death. In painting, I try to capture and convey the essence of the subject and also my own feelings. When painting, I seek a sense of unity with what I see. That moment when we're drawn together, inter-connected. This connection happens when I paint portraits, wildlife, or scenery as well as abstract "palette paintings".

Linocuts

The imagery in my work is inspired by my surroundings. In the past, my prints have explored naturally occurring still lives that surround us in our homes. A suite of prints of winter landscape completed in 2006 was my final expression of 10 years living in Lanark County, and the start of my examination of surroundings on a larger scale. Since moving to Ottawa I have begun to explore the urban landscape, starting in my own neighbourhood, and extending to other North American and European cities I have recently visited. There is something fascinating about the organization of vernacular buildings. I am drawn to the contrast of similarity and uniqueness in a row of houses on a street.
